Mechanical & Electrical Building Services

MEP engineering shapes how a building performs once it’s handed over. We design the mechanical, electrical and public health systems that keep hospitals clean and offices comfortable. The same systems keep a factory running to schedule too. Every heat pump, cable run and light fitting is specified to work well for years, not just to pass inspection on day one. That is what building services engineering is for.

What sets us apart in MEP engineering

30 years of building services experience

Engineers who stay past handover

Our MEP engineers trace back to Waldeck’s building services work and now sit inside the wider Morson Group, giving us a depth of technical resource few standalone firms can match. We produce full BSRIA Stage 4 designs, stay on site through the build and check how a building performs once it’s live. Most consultancies hand over a set of drawings and move on. We stay involved until the systems are proven to work.

Environmental Design Consultants

Here’s the thing about sustainability – it’s not just a nice-to-have anymore. It’s the difference between buildings that thrive and those that become expensive mistakes. At Morson Praxis, we’re the bridge between your ambitious net-zero goals and the engineering reality that makes them happen.

Our team doesn’t just design building services; we weave them into the very DNA of your project. Think of us as the translators who speak fluent ‘sustainability regulation’ and ‘practical engineering’ – because frankly, you need both to succeed in today’s landscape.

Where Engineering Meets Intelligence

Here’s the thing about mechanical building services – they’re the invisible heroes of every great building. The systems that keep people comfortable, safe, and productive, all while working quietly behind the scenes. At Morson Praxis, we don’t just design these systems; we craft intelligent solutions that bridge the gap between cutting-edge engineering and real-world performance.

How we support MEP engineering projects

Regulation

Reading the rules before they're written down

Part L, Part F and the Building Safety Act shape most decisions on a modern MEP engineering project. Getting them wrong costs real money in redesign. We track changes to building regulations as they land, not after a planning authority sends a scheme back. Our planning reports and early advice are built to answer a case officer’s questions before they’re asked, which keeps a scheme moving rather than stalled in a queue. That knowledge comes from live projects across healthcare, education, data centres and defence estates, not from theory. When a client asks whether a design will pass, we can usually explain why.

Technical depth

Engineers who've solved this problem before

Building services work rewards firms who’ve seen a wide range of problems, not just a few similar ones. Our engineers move between hospitals that need reliable standby power and data centres that need precise cooling loads. The next project might be a school with a tight budget stretched across a long asset life. That range means fewer surprises once a project is live, since most challenges have already come up somewhere in our past work. We test how a design performs across a full year rather than assume from one hot afternoon, and we back every design decision with BSRIA and CIBSE guidance rather than habit.

Net Zero

Decarbonising buildings with a clear method

Government policy on decarbonising heat has turned low carbon MEP design from an optional extra into a baseline expectation. Our team designs heat pump systems, mechanical ventilation with heat recovery and combined heat and power solutions that reduce emissions without increasing running costs. We carry out BREEAM assessments across the full range of ratings and produce sustainability statements that give planning authorities real evidence to work from. The most significant carbon gains are set at concept stage, so that’s where we look to be involved, well before a wall goes up and the options narrow.

Understanding MEP engineering

MEP is mechanical, electrical and public health engineering, the three disciplines that make a building work. These systems heat, light, ventilate and drain a building once it’s built. Most construction projects need all three designed together, not as separate elements.

MEP and building services engineering are largely the same discipline, described in two ways. MEP is the common industry term. Building services engineering is the broader professional term CIBSE and most UK consultancies use. Both cover mechanical, electrical and public health design.

A mechanical and electrical engineering consultancy is a firm that designs and specifies the systems that heat, cool, light and power a building, then checks them against the brief. Work spans concept design through the RIBA stages to on site commissioning. Most projects need close coordination with architects and structural engineers throughout.

Early MEP engineering services are more effective and less costly than late ones. Riser positions, plant space and ductwork routes are far easier to agree at concept stage than once a building’s layout is fixed. Waiting until detailed design usually means fitting services into a shape that wasn’t built for them.

MEP engineering is central to any net zero building, since heating, cooling and power account for most of a building’s operational emissions. Heat pumps, mechanical ventilation with heat recovery and dynamic simulation modelling all fall under MEP design. Getting this right early locks in the largest carbon savings.
