National Grid, Heysham Operational Tripping System

Morson Praxis were appointed by National Grid to support the Heysham Operational Tripping Scheme (OTS), a major initiative designed to enhance the stability and reliability of the Transmission System across the North West 1 and North West 2 regions.

Client Brief

Integrating New Generation into the Transmission System

National Grid identified the need to accommodate current and future generation sources within the existing network infrastructure.
The objective was to implement an automated tripping scheme that could swiftly and safely disconnect generation sources during fault conditions, ensuring the continued protection and resilience of the UK’s transmission network.

Project Overview

Enabling the Heysham OTS Scheme

The Heysham OTS enabling project was a collaborative effort between Morson Praxis and National Grid to integrate new generation fields with existing supplies, creating a robust and responsive system.
The scheme automatically trips breakers to isolate generators upon receipt of fault signals, helping maintain network stability during transmission events.

Morson Praxis conducted site surveys across thirty circuits and sixteen sites to assess the feasibility of using existing primary assets. The results informed detailed design intent documents and engineering design packages that underpinned the OTS rollout.

Our Solution

From Design to Commissioning

Morson Praxis’ multi-disciplinary engineering teams delivered a full-service solution covering the design, build, installation, and commissioning phases.
Our Installation & Commissioning Department provided all build requirements, supported by TP144 Site Management and TP141 Commissioning Teams, ensuring compliance with National Grid standards and seamless integration with existing infrastructure.
The new Heysham OTS Scheme successfully went live in October 2015, enhancing operational flexibility and network reliability.

Results

A Safer, Smarter, and Stronger Network

Through close collaboration with National Grid, Morson Praxis delivered a fully integrated OTS system that strengthens fault management, safety, and continuity of supply.
The project provides a future-ready framework for connecting new generation capacity while maintaining the stability of the UK’s transmission system.
