Siemens, Overspeed Test Rig

Morson Praxis were appointed by Siemens to design, manufacture and install a new overspeed test rig for one of their turbine systems — a critical asset for verifying turbine performance and safety under extreme operating conditions.

Client Brief

Reliable Testing, Proven Results

Siemens required a robust and precisely engineered test rig capable of safely housing and driving a turbine rotor during overspeed testing. The rig needed to replicate real-world operating conditions while ensuring safety, repeatability, and compliance with stringent engineering standards.

Project Overview

Engineering with Accuracy and Assurance

The test rig, measuring 2250mm x 650mm x 1000mm, was designed to accommodate full-scale overspeed testing within Siemens’ test chamber.
It incorporate a custom base stand and lifting brackets for installation and mobility, agearbox assembly to drive the turbine rotor during testing and an internal bearing and lubrication system that replicated turbine performance and ensured safe, high-speed operation.

To guarantee integrity, Morson Praxis utilised Siemens’ stress analysis data to verify structural strength, alongside detailed inspection reports confirming that all design tolerances were achieved.
