Bombardier, Old Oak Common Rail Depot

Morson Praxis was appointed by Bombardier to provide a full multi-disciplinary technical peer review alongside Architectural, Civil and Structural Engineering, and Mechanical and Electrical Building Services Design support.

Client Brief

Ensuring design assurance and operational readines

Bombardier commissioned a new depot capable of accommodating up to 33 new 200-metre-long trains for routine maintenance. The facility forms part of the wider Crossrail and Transport for London (TfL) network, supporting the efficient operation and long-term maintenance of the fleet.

Bombardier required a partner with deep technical and operational understanding of depot environments to provide independent design review and assurance, ensuring all works met stringent safety, compliance, and performance standards.

Project Overview

A modern depot for the Crossrail fleet

The new facility is designed to support the routine maintenance, inspection, and servicing of Bombardier’s new build trains, manufactured and assembled at their Derby plant.

The depot design integrates a range of operational, technical, and maintenance functions, enabling Bombardier to deliver a modern, efficient, and compliant facility aligned with TfL’s high standards.

Our Solution

Delivering design assurance and multidisciplinary review

Morson Praxis undertook a comprehensive technical peer review of all depot design elements, ensuring full compliance with both Crossrail and TfL requirements. The team reviewed and commented on all design documentation within a strict 10-day turnaround, maintaining efficiency and consistency across the project timeline.

They also attended inter-disciplinary review meetings to ensure seamless coordination and alignment across all engineering disciplines. All design comments were meticulously logged, tracked, and closed out with the main contractor to guarantee complete compliance and accountability.

Drawing on their extensive experience in depot design, the Morson Praxis team provided valuable technical insight and constructive challenge where required, enhancing overall design quality and improving project efficiency.

Results

Assuring quality and supporting delivery

Our team continues to provide regular site attendance, acting as Bombardier’s “eyes and ears” during construction to monitor progress and ensure that works align with design intent and quality standards.

Upon completion, the depot will accommodate up to 33 200-metre-long trains, supporting routine maintenance and ensuring reliable service for Crossrail passengers.

Through our collaborative and technically focused approach, Morson Praxis helped ensure the depot meets all safety, operational, and engineering expectations reinforcing Bombardier’s position as a leader in UK rail innovation.
