Morson Praxis supported Merseytravel with the modernisation of the tunnel control systems for the Kingsway and Queensway tunnels.
Merseytravel required a single, unified SCADA system to replace five separate control systems operating across the Kingsway and Queensway tunnels. The project aimed to improve operational efficiency, increase system reliability, and provide a modern control platform capable of supporting the long-term operation of the tunnel network.
The upgrade also required the replacement of legacy PLC infrastructure while ensuring the tunnels remained operational throughout the implementation programme.
The project involved replacing the existing Modicon 984-145 PLC outstations with new Ethernet-enabled Schneider Electric outstations connected to the client’s converged IP network, replacing the legacy Modbus Plus communications infrastructure.
To minimise disruption to tunnel operations, the new SCADA platform and PLCs were introduced through a carefully managed phased migration. Each outstation panel was transferred individually, allowing operational functions to be progressively migrated from the existing FactoryLink SCADA system while maintaining the safe and reliable operation of the tunnels.
