Client Brief
Improving Energy Efficiency Across Hospital Infrastructure
Sheffield Children’s Hospital required a modern and efficient energy solution to replace ageing plant infrastructure and improve the reliability of its existing systems.
The project aimed to consolidate seven inefficient plantrooms into a new centralised Energy Centre, incorporating advanced energy technologies to improve performance, reduce energy consumption, and support the hospital’s ongoing operational needs.
Project Overview
Delivering a Modern Energy Centre Solution
Morson Praxis provided the technical design for a new Energy Centre incorporating a 550kW combined heat and power (CHP) engine and high-efficiency condensing gas-fired boilers.
Following the success of the Energy Centre project, Morson Praxis was appointed to support the next phase of the hospital upgrade, which involved capturing waste heat from the CHP flue gas and integrating it into a new absorption chiller system.

Specialist Mechanical and Electrical Design Expertise
Morson Praxis delivered full Mechanical and Electrical Building Services Design for the Energy Centre, providing technical expertise throughout the development and integration of the new energy systems.
Our team supported the detailed design and coordination of the CHP engine, condensing boilers, and associated infrastructure, ensuring the new facility provided an efficient and reliable solution for the hospital.
Following the successful completion of the initial works, we continued to support the hospital’s energy strategy through the design of an innovative absorption chiller system, utilising waste heat from the CHP flue gas to further improve energy efficiency.
