HMP Thameside, New House Block

Morson Praxis was appointed to provide Civil and Structural Engineering services for a new modular accommodation block at HMP Thameside.

Client Brief

Delivering Safe and Efficient Custodial Accommodation

HMP Thameside required a new four-storey accommodation block as part of the development of its custodial facilities. The project called for a structural solution that would support efficient construction while meeting the stringent safety and operational requirements of a secure prison environment.

Working with Buchan Concrete, Morson Praxis was appointed to deliver the Civil and Structural Engineering design for the new pre-cast modular building.

Project Overview

Designing a Modern Pre-Cast Modular Structure

The project involved the design and construction of a new four-storey pre-cast modular accommodation block using a cross-wall structural system. Morson Praxis worked closely with the contractor to deliver the full detailed structural design, ensuring the building could be constructed efficiently while maintaining high standards of quality and performance.

Through close collaboration with the Mechanical and Electrical contractor, conduits were integrated within the pre-cast walls and floor slabs, allowing building services to remain concealed. This approach enhanced safety for both staff and inmates while reducing on-site installation time and improving construction efficiency.

Our Solutions

Civil and Structural Engineering for Modular Construction

Morson Praxis provided the full detailed Civil and Structural Engineering design for the new accommodation block, developing the pre-cast cross-wall structural solution in collaboration with Buchan Concrete and the wider project team.

Our engineers worked closely with the Mechanical and Electrical contractor to coordinate the integration of service conduits within the pre-cast elements. This coordinated approach reduced follow-on works during construction, improved buildability, and delivered a safer, more efficient solution for the completed facility.

Results

Improving Construction Efficiency and Operational Safety

The coordinated design approach enabled faster construction through the use of pre-cast modular elements while reducing the amount of on-site mechanical and electrical installation required.

By integrating services within the structure itself, Morson Praxis helped deliver a secure, efficient, and practical accommodation facility that supports the operational requirements of HMP Thameside.
