Morson Praxis was approached by Network Plus to deliver a proof-of-concept project exploring how digital capture technology could improve the management of vegetation around key power infrastructure. The project aimed to enhance efficiency, accuracy, and safety in maintaining overhead power lines by reducing reliance on traditional, schedule-based inspections.
Network Plus required a smarter, data-driven method to manage vegetation encroachment across extensive overhead power line networks. The existing maintenance strategy followed standardised schedules rather than real-time asset conditions. Morson Praxis was tasked with assessing whether advanced digital capture and analysis could provide measurable improvements in maintenance planning and operational efficiency.
Overhead power lines require constant clearance from vegetation to avoid outages and equipment damage. With thousands of spans distributed across diverse environments, manual inspections were time-consuming and resource-intensive. Morson Praxis proposed using point cloud surveys to rapidly capture detailed data across multiple sample sites, supporting Network Plus in building a scalable, evidence-based vegetation management strategy.
Digitally transforming power network maintenance
Using LiDAR-based handheld Simultaneous Localisation and Mapping (SLAM) technology, our team quickly captured detailed 3D data of selected power line spans in under two minutes per scan.
Data Capture: Before and after vegetation removal, each span was surveyed without requiring power shutdowns or access equipment.
Visualisation & Analysis: By overlaying datasets, we quantified vegetation clearance and extracted key metrics such as distances between conductors and nearby vegetation.
Ongoing Asset Management: The processed data was integrated into a secure cloud-based asset management system, enabling predictive maintenance scheduling based on vegetation growth patterns and risk proximity.
The proof-of-concept demonstrated how SLAM-based digital capture combined with intelligent asset management can transform vegetation control for power infrastructure. Network Plus gained the ability to visualise clearance works, predict future risks, and target maintenance more efficiently optimising resources, reducing disruption, and supporting a safer, more resilient power network.

“We required a digital data capture proof-of-concept at short notice and contacted Waldeck who were quick to respond with their professional and knowledgeable staff. Who, recommending the best technical application for our purposes, conducted a detailed field trial which ultimately proved successful”.
