Hi Will! Congratulations on your shortlist. Please can you tell us a bit about your role?

My role within the Architecture & Digital Captures Department is Senior Digital Capture Surveyor. As of the Digital Capture Team, a technician, I am responsible for undertaking site visits and completing surveys, primarily using laser scanners. This data is then processed, and a 3D digital twin is produced, which can be utilised by our other teams within Morson Praxis. Within the Digital Capture team, we also conduct drone surveys, topographical surveys and SLAM surveys.

Some of my key responsibilities include:

  • Site visits and surveys – attending sites up and down the country, performing surveys through the use of laser scanners, GNSS and drones.
  • Digital modelling from Point Clouds – creating accurate digital twin models from the point cloud data, enabling the Architecture team to produce accurate drawings.
  • Production of topographies – using a combination of GNSS and laser scan data to produce accurate topographical drawings.
  • Drone Surveys – using our drones to conduct aerial surveys of assets, producing Revit models or topographies, depending on the client’s requirements.
  • Collaboration on multi-disciplinary projects – close collaboration across all our teams, particularly with the architecture team, to ensure all necessary data is captured whilst on site allowing our other teams to perform their roles efficiently.

My recent project involvement:

HMP WhattonA series of visits, individually and as part of a team to scan every single building to produce 2D CAD plans, and then 3D Revit models.

How have you demonstrated a commitment to personal growth and progress in your career?

Before joining Morson Praxis, I was on a totally different career path. I was originally working in the hospitality industry; when the COVID lockdown happened, I applied for a Master’s course in Building Surveying with Northumbria University.

As we came out of lockdown, I was promoted to Assistant Restaurant Manager, so I had to juggle learning the ins and outs of my new role, as well as studying towards my Master’s, which after many long hours I successfully achieved the Distinction I was aiming for.

I was fortunate enough to be approached directly by Morson Praxis, despite having absolutely zero experience in the industry. However, the team around me were incredibly accommodating and patient with me whilst I found my feet, and 2 years later I feel I have firmly embedded myself as part of the team.

Within the first month of joining, I attended an A2 Certificate of Competency (COFC) and drone piloting course, enabling me to perform drone surveys on behalf of the company. I also then went on to complete other courses, such as the CSCS for managers and Professionals, and the BRE BIM ISO 19650 Essentials, ensuring I was fully up to date with the latest industry practices.

To further my professional development, I also enrolled on the company’s ‘Early Careers Development Programme’ which runs across the entire Morson Group. My mentor, Amy, is head of Digital Capture here at Morson Praxis, and she has been instrumental in my development so far. By having regular mentor meetings with her, we have been able to set realistic, achievable, increasingly ambitious targets to work towards, whilst enabling me to evaluate my performance so far.

I also had the privilege of attending the Early Careers Development conference in Manchester last year, giving me the opportunity to meet and network with other people and businesses across the wider Morson Group, as well as learning about all the ways Morson plans on championing young talent over the next few years. I also won an award at the conference, the Courageous Award, for always throwing myself into new situations, not being afraid of challenges and always willing to question existing techniques and striving to improve my performance in everything I do.

Over the past two years I have developed both professionally and individually, and now that we have recently recruited a new Junior Digital Capture Surveyor, Alfie, to our team, I feel I can now use the knowledge and experience I have gained to help aid Alfie in his own development.

We also regularly partake in activities outside of work. We have a team day every year; this allows us to debrief on the year so far but also strengthen relationships within the team by participating in games. We also occasionally participate in the local pub quiz, often split into two teams, where the aim isn’t so much to win overall, just to beat the other team! Participating in these events helps strengthen us as a team and it is a privilege to be part of such a strong and healthy culture.

The Director of Will’s team, Stuart Denniss shared of his progress:

“Since joining the Digital Capture team, Will has consistently demonstrated exceptional performance and a strong commitment to learning his new role and adding value to the team. He quickly established himself as a reliable and knowledgeable team member, bringing both a positive attitude and a proactive approach to every project.

“Will has excelled in learning the new technologies that are required in digital capture team. His attention to detail and problem-solving skills have significantly improved the accuracy and efficiency of data capture processes.

“Overall, Will’s contributions have made a positive impact on the Digital Capture team’s success. His dedication, adaptability, and commitment to continuous improvement have positioned him as a key asset to the team and a valued member of the organisation’s ongoing growth. With this Will achieved promotion to Senior Digital Capture surveyor early 2025 a position that was fully deserved for his hardwork.”

What would it mean to you to win this award?

Winning this award would feel like a reflection of all the hard work I have put into my time here at Morson Praxis over the past two years; coming from a background in hospitality with no past experience or knowledge, to now being able to impart some of my knowledge and experience to help train up the next generation of digital capture surveyors I believe shows how far I have come on my journey so far.

I think winning this award would also showcase that career changes are not impossible for those thinking about it, accepting the offer from Morson Praxis and jumping into a completely alien world compared to what I was accustomed to was a daunting prospect, but I knew it was what I wanted to do, and as long as I kept my head down and got stuck into everything that came my way I would be fine, and to now be up for this award is a testament to all my hard work.

I feel this award would also be recognition of Morson Praxis and the digital and architecture team within it; everyone has been so welcoming, patient and willing to help me as I found my feet and was getting to grips with all the processes and procedures involved with being a surveyor. Without them, I would not be where I am today, so I have to extend a massive thank you to all of them, particularly to my Director, Stuart, for seeing the potential in me from the start.

I am excited for the future, as the technology we work with on a daily basis is always evolving and there is always more to learn. Within Digital Capture we are always looking at new software and technologies to add to our arsenal to streamline what we already do, as well as enabling us to branch into new areas; to be at the forefront of that opportunity is incredibly exciting and I cannot wait to see where my future at Morson Praxis takes me.
