As part of our ‘Meet the team’ series, we caught up with Luke, a Mechanical Design Apprentice who is part of our Building Services team and is also currently enrolled on our wider Early Careers Development Programme.
Based in our Sheffield office, Luke has been working at Morson Praxis since 2024, where at the age of 18 we welcomed him as an Apprentice.
Luke is currently studying a Degree in Mechanical Engineering at Sheffield Hallam University and is due to finish in 2028.
We caught up with Luke to hear more about their Early Careers Development Programme journey so far:
Hi Luke! What has your education journey been like so far?

“My education journey has been a mix of academic learning and real-world experience, which I’ve found incredibly valuable. From studying my GCSEs through to completing my degree, I’ve always been curious about how things work. Completing an apprenticeship has allowed me to see both sides of the picture, helping me connect what I’ve learned in theory with how it’s applied in practice.”
What are some of the most interesting projects you’ve worked on?
“Whilst working at Morson Praxis I’ve been lucky to get involved in a wide range of projects. I started off working on the University of Huddersfield Emily Siddon building, which was the first ever facility to include an NHS Diagnostic Centre Co-Located on a UK university campus.

“More recently, I’ve been working on a Tesco Decarbonisation Scheme, which involves removing old, redundant systems in store and replacing them with more sustainable solutions, such as air source heat pumps and refurbished air handling units. The project has been challenging due to the age of the buildings, but it’s also been incredibly rewarding knowing the positive difference it will make.”
What motivates you in your work?
“I’m motivated by the opportunity to constantly learn new things and by seeing the designs I’ve produced progress from the initial concept stages through to construction. Knowing that the projects I contribute to help create more efficient, comfortable, and sustainable buildings for the future is incredibly rewarding.”
How does the company support your professional growth and development?
“The company supports my professional growth through a structured pathway towards achieving my IEng (IMechE) qualification, with my mentor, Craig Harrison, guiding me as I take on more responsibility and continue to develop my technical understanding. Morson Praxis also supports my professional development by covering the cost of my professional membership, and I’m currently a member of CIBSE YEN.”

What are your career aspirations for the next five years?
“Over the next five years, I aim to continue developing my skills and technical knowledge, with the goal of taking on greater responsibility and eventually leading larger projects. Within the next two years, I expect to have completed my bachelor’s degree and may go on to begin a master’s. Gaining these qualifications, alongside my experience at work, will allow me to work towards chartership and continue developing as a well-rounded engineer.”
What tips would you give to others starting out in the industry?
“My biggest piece of advice would be to talk to people. Being able to communicate well and build relationships, whether that’s with colleagues, manufacturers, or clients, is one of the most valuable skills you can have. You’d be surprised how willing people are to help when you simply ask for support.
“I’d also recommend staying consistent in building your core skills early on, such as communication, listening, and time management. With a strong foundation in these areas, you can work towards any goal you set for yourself.”
What do you enjoy doing outside of work?
“Outside of work, I love going climbing. I’m a big believer in how staying active helps you feel better, both in and out of the office.”
