Morson Praxis was appointed by Network Rail to provide Civil and Structural Engineering services for the redevelopment of London Bridge Station, one of the UK’s most significant rail infrastructure upgrades.
Network Rail required engineering expertise to deliver detailed design for over 4,000 precast concrete elements forming part of the new platform structures. The designs needed to support an efficient, safe, and sustainable construction process, aligning with Building Information Modelling (BIM) Level 2 standards.
The redevelopment of London Bridge Station formed part of the £6 billion Thameslink Programme, a major government investment to improve capacity and connectivity across the UK rail network.
The transformation included the creation of a new concourse, additional platforms, and upgraded infrastructure to accommodate more trains and enhance passenger experience at what is now the fourth busiest station in the country. The works were delivered by Costain and Hyder/WSP on behalf of Network Rail, with Charcon Specialist Products supplying the precast platforms.
A closer look at London Bridge Station’s redevelopment
Morson Praxis provided Civil and Structural Engineering design for over 4,000 precast concrete platform elements. Using Tekla Structures and working at BIM Level 2, our engineers developed fully detailed 3D models that were automatically converted into 2D deliverables for manufacture and construction.
Our team also supported the prototype area of the project, providing data to assess constructability, maintenance, and the coordination of drainage and electrical services. Advanced digital collaboration ensured all models were shared in multiple formats with the main contractor and client, streamlining design approval and fabrication processes.
By integrating BIM into every stage, we enabled accurate progress tracking, design coordination, and efficient production of the precast elements, helping to keep manufacturing on schedule.
The completed London Bridge Station now features a modern concourse, additional platforms, and vastly improved passenger facilities. The redevelopment has increased capacity, reduced congestion, and delivered a future-ready transport hub for millions of passengers.
Through innovative engineering and digital precision, Morson Praxis played a key role in one of the UK’s largest and most complex rail infrastructure projects, setting a benchmark for BIM-led design delivery in the transport sector.
