Buckingham Group Ltd, Coventry Station & Multi-Storey Car Park

Coventry City Council recently invested £82million in creating a new-look gateway for passengers who arrive in the city by train. The Council has been working in partnership with Network Rail, rail operators, Transport for West Midlands, Friargate Coventry LLP and other stakeholders, including our team at Morson Praxis.

From concept to completion, a truly multi-disciplinary solution.

Our Solution

Design, Development and Delivery

Step 1: Design

Our team began work on the project after receiving the GRIP 4 Design from the Concept Designers. Morson Praxis carried out a detailed design review, offering value engineering options to the main contractor and client. We then progressed the design to GRIP Stage 5, ensuring full compliance with Network Rail requirements and coordinating with other live schemes on site, acting as Lead Designer throughout.

Step 2: Development
With the initial design complete, our team developed the scheme in line with Phase 1 of the project, working closely with consultants and the contractor. We created and managed a federated BIM model to coordinate the design and ensure a fully integrated approach. All design submissions were managed in accordance with the GRIP process to secure Network Rail approvals efficiently.

Step 3: Delivery
Once approved, our team supported Buckingham Group during on-site delivery. Acting as Lead Designer, we provided ongoing site-based support, maintained coordination across all disciplines, and managed the necessary Network Rail processes to ensure the scheme was delivered successfully and collaboratively.

Our Results

Delivering a Connected and Secure Transport Interchange

Morson Praxis led the multi-disciplinary team on this complex infrastructure project, coordinating multiple stakeholders and design interfaces.

The scheme included new public spaces, a bus interchange, station and platform access, and highway works, all designed to Secure by Design and SIDOS standards.

Delivered through Network Rail’s GRIP process, the project provided assured design for concourse, welfare, retail, and office areas, with an architecturally clad multi-storey car park designed to ICE standards.

Testimonials

Hear from the experts

Gary Cartwright, Senior Design Manager at Buckingham Group added:

“It has been a challenging build given everything that we have faced with the global pandemic, material shortages and more recently the huge price inflations, however after three years of hard work from everybody involved it is fantastic to see the facilities open to the public so thank you all for your commitment throughout this project.”

Neale Stephens, Divisional Director at Morson Praxis shared:

“Using BIM principles alongside our integrated digital software packages, including Revit, assisted heavily with design co-ordination throughout the project and ensured that the design process continued effectively with teams operating remotely during the pandemic.

“Overall, the team collaborated exceptionally on both the client and Morson sides, working well together with a flexible and ‘can-do’ approach being adopted by all.

“The completed station and bus interchange looks fantastic and has been shown to be fit-for-purpose as rail travel continues to rise again following the pandemic. As individuals and a team, we have all gained a sense of pride and achievement, especially as we are seeing such positive feedback from the community across online media coverage.”
