Spirit Aerospace, A350 Fixed Leading Edge

Morson Praxis were appointed by Spirit AeroSystems to provide analysis and design services for metallic and composite parts of the Mid and Outer Fixed Leading Edge of the A350-1000. This included C-MAT and DFM design, along with complete programme management, supporting the aircraft through critical stages of development and flight readiness.

Client Brief

Specialist Support for Fixed Leading Edge

Spirit AeroSystems required a specialist team to manage the design, stress analysis, and residual strength assessment for the Fixed Leading Edge, ensuring compliance with A350-1000 specifications and readiness for first flight.

Project Overview

Delivering Complete Residual Strength Assessment

Our team worked closely with Spirit AeroSystems to deliver a wide range of design and analysis support, including the Fixed Leading Edge Residual Strength assessment. This encompassed UERF, Hail Strike, and MLP scenarios to ensure the structural integrity of the aircraft during its first flight.

Our Solution

Integrated Design and Stress Expertise

Morson Praxis delivered to an agreed Statement of Work, completing tasks for buttstraps, closing ribs, de-ice regions, fixed system brackets, flap track ribs, J-Nose composite panels, lower removable composite panels, spreader plates, system raceways, and intermediate ribs. The project produced close to 900 design and stress deliverables across C-MAT and DFM, utilizing CATIA V5 R23 and PDMLink. For residual strength, automated tools reduced phase 1 analysis time by 50%, covering exceedance checks, FLE IFEM models, interface load reports, static sizing, fatigue, and damage tolerance analysis. Stress and F&DT reports were produced using Excel, MathCAD, NASTRAN, PATRAN, and ISAMI.

Result

Supporting First Flight Success

The project successfully delivered all design and analysis requirements, supporting the A350-1000 first flight. Morson Praxis’ efficient use of automated tools and integrated workflows enabled the client to meet critical deadlines while maintaining the highest standards of safety, quality, and performance.
